Patriot-News Endorses Josh Shapiro for Attorney General

The following is an excerpt from an endorsement editorial published by the Patriot-News on Friday, October 21.

In an interview with the PennLive/Patriot-News Editorial Board, Shapiro outlined aggressive plans to fight opioid abuse, to take the lead on environmental issues and protect consumers and senior citizens.

Among his marquee proposals for the Attorney General’s Office is the institution of a code of conduct that would set down clear lines of ethical conduct for the agency’s more than 800 employees.

He would also use his bully pulpit to pursue legislative authorization of a gift ban for all government employees and push for increased funding for the state Ethics Commission.

As the first Democratic County Commission chairman in Montgomery County in 150 years, Shapiro helped clean up a fiscal mess and is credited with restoring comity to a divided board.

Overseeing such a large county government operation gives him an executive and management edge over Rafferty, who cannot boast similar experience on an admittedly impressive resume.

With his progressive vision for the office and edge in management experience, we believe Shapiro is better suited for the job of restoring credibility and stability to an office that badly needs both.
