LGBT organizations and leaders across the Commonwealth endorsed Josh Shapiro for Pennsylvania Attorney General, based on his track record of fighting for LGBT rights in the state House, in Montgomery County and in this campaign. Yesterday, Equality PA announced its endorsement of Shapiro and today they are joined by the Liberty City Democratic Club and the Capital Region Stonewall Democrats.
“Josh is the only candidate in the race for Attorney General who has consistently fought to protect the rights of Pennsylvania’s LGBT community,” said Ted Martin, executive director of Equality PA. “In the state House, Josh championed legislation to protect LGBT Pennsylvanians from discrimination and hate crimes. In Montgomery County, he helped the first gay couples marry in Pennsylvania, paving the way for marriage equality. We know that he’ll continue to fight for all of our rights as Attorney General.”
“It comes down to record and commitment,” said Anne Wakabayashi, co-chair of the Liberty City Democratic Club. “Josh has always fought to expand protections for the LGBT community and fight for our rights. As Attorney General, he will fight to protect the rights of all Pennsylvanians.”
“From marriage equality and non-discrimination protections to expanding hate-crimes legislation, Josh has stood with the LGBT community,” said Tony Campisi, co-chair of the Liberty City Democratic Club. “We know that Josh will keep standing with our community as Pennsylvania Attorney General.”
“It’s critical that we have an Attorney General who will protect and fight for the rights of the LGBT community across our Commonwealth,” said Ben Allatt, Harrisburg City Councilman and chair of the Capital Region Stonewall Democrats. “In Josh Shapiro, we’re backing a true progressive leader who will fight for a more just, inclusive and equal Pennsylvania.”
In addition to these groups, a number of prominent LGBT individuals also endorsed Shapiro, including:
- Mark Segal – Author, Activist and Publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News
- Adrian Shanker – LGBT Advocate and Chair of the Pennsylvania Democrats’ LGBT Caucus
- Chris Dietz – Milliersburg Borough Council President
- Michelle Kessler – UFCW OUTreach International Chair
“Josh has been an ally of the LGBT community since the very beginning of his public service. I’m proud to add my name to the long list of LGBT leaders from around the state who support Josh’s campaign,” said Mark Segal, an author, activist and publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News.
“I’ve spent my career protecting the rights of all Pennsylvanians, especially the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of our communities and Commonwealth and am proud to have Equality PA’s support in this campaign,” said Commissioner Shapiro. “As Attorney General, I’ll continue to protect the LGBT community and uphold the rights of all Pennsylvanians. I’ll diversify the Office of Attorney General, so it fully reflects the people it serves. And I’ll restore integrity to our system so that all Pennsylvanians can get a fair shake in our justice system, regardless of where they live, the color of their skin or who they love.”
