President Barack Obama endorses Josh Shapiro for Attorney General

Today, President Barack Obama endorsed Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro for Pennsylvania Attorney General, saying Shapiro “represents a new generation of progressive leadership.” As an official Shapiro has worked with the Obama Administration on issues from health care and workforce training to criminal justice reform.
“Josh Shapiro is a true progressive with a strong record of standing up for Pennsylvania families,” said President Obama. “As Attorney General he’ll fight to reform the criminal justice system to make it fairer for all and protect seniors and consumers. Josh Shapiro is a person with character and integrity and represents a new generation of progressive leadership. I’m proud to endorse Josh Shapiro for Attorney General.”
The President’s endorsement is a recognition of Josh Shapiro’s stellar career in public service, where he has shown an optimistic determination to deliver pragmatic, progressive reform. Josh wrote and passed some of the most sweeping ethics laws in a generation as a young State Representative, and in the first year of President Obama’s Administration he was one of only thirty-two state legislators from across the country to serve on a special White House Team for Health Reform.
As Chairman of Montgomery County, Josh proved to be a talented manager and a principled consensus-builder by turning around a fiscal mess, reforming government services to be more efficient and effective, and standing up for progressive values from voting rights to marriage equality. This year the Obama Administration recognized Montgomery County’s efforts on criminal justice reform as one of only 20 counties in the United States to receive competitive funding to reduce recidivism through workforce programs.
Now, as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, Josh is helping lead the fight against the heroin epidemic that is robbing thousands of their future in cities, suburbs and rural towns across Pennsylvania. Leaders like Josh are who Democrats can count on to pick up the torch and advance the values that President Obama has fought for throughout his Administration.
“Ever since we met in Pennsylvania a decade ago, I’ve admired Barack Obama and his thoughtful, courageous determination to bring about real change and advance the cause of justice,” said Shapiro. “I am deeply honored to have earned a rare endorsement from the President. As Attorney General, I will carry on the fight to give a voice to the voiceless in Pennsylvania, bring about fairness in our justice system and continue to take on the status quo, just as President Obama has done throughout his career.”
