At the official presentation of the award Tuesday, Abington officials were on hand to celebrate the achievement. State Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-153, spoke of how such an award affects the entire community, not just residents with school-aged children.

Gerber, Shapiro and Taylor are three of the four state representatives whose districts include portions of Upper Dublin Township. The fourth is Tom Murt, R-152.
Reflections on the state budget: late but fair
101 days late, but the state finally has a budget. In the end the budget we passed is balanced, makes important investments and reasonable cuts without unduly burdening Pennsylvania taxpayers. However, there is no excuse for the delay and reforms are needed to ensure that future budgets are passed on time.
As we considered the FY2009-10 budget, the Commonwealth faced an unprecedented $3.5 billion deficit due to the recession and falling revenues. Our choice was to cut billions in spending from our $28 billion budget, raise taxes to cover the shortfall, or do some of each.
We opted to do some of each.
Transfers get credit for record enrollment
Jan Murphy writing for The Patriot-News:
Students are transferring to the 14 state universities in numbers never seen before, and some observers cite the state’s college credit transfer law as a reason.
That law and stepped-up recruiting efforts have driven up enrollment at the State System of Higher Education schools to a record 116,935 this fall, officials said. That increase represents a nearly 4 percent rise from last year.
Students rally against closing of Governor’s School
Terri Alderfer writing for The Ambler Gazette:
Upper Dublin High School students and alumni of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools of Excellence are fighting against Gov. Ed Rendell’s decision to cut funding for the summer enrichment schools, and took their fight to all the way to Harrisburg March 10.
When 12 UDHS students heard Feb. 4 that the eight governor’s schools would be cut from the state budget, they got together to do something about it. They knew about an existing online petition written by some PGSE for the Arts alumni that had attracted 11,000 signatures against the budget cuts, but wanted to do better. So they decided to write their own letter, made thousands of copies, got individual signatures for each one and took them directly to the governor’s office.
