Gradual downsizing of Legislature proposed

HARRISBURG — Knowing state lawmakers are loathe to eliminate their own seats, a Republican senator Wednesday proposed a slow-motion plan to reduce the size of the Legislature each decade.

Pennsylvania has the largest full-time Legislature in the nation — a 203-member House and 50-member Senate. Scores of proposals to reduce the size of the General Assembly have died in committee over the years.

Lawmakers Tout Efforts Over Iran Sanctions

As the Obama administration awaited an official response from Iran as to whether it would abide by a draft plan concerning uranium enrichment, two Pennsylvania lawmakers highlighted efforts on Capitol Hill and in Harrisburg to enact deeper sanctions against the Iranian regime.

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and State Rep. Josh Shapiro (D-District 153) touted those efforts during an Oct. 26 news conference held at the Jewish Community Services Building in Philadelphia. Casey and U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) introduced the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act, which would authorize state and local governments — and their pension funds — to divest from companies doing business with Iran’s energy sector.

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 26 – U.S. Senator Bob Casey today joined state Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-Montgomery, to advocate for the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act, federal legislation that would authorize the divestment of public pension money from companies doing business in Iran’s oil and natural gas sector.
