The budget deal in Harrisburg will cut funding for libraries, social services, and education, but legislators plan to keep plenty of taxpayers’ money for their own special “needs.”

Budget negotiators have set aside at least $100 million for what’s known as “walking-around money.” WAMs are discretionary grants that individual lawmakers hand out to favored groups in their home districts with little justification and no accountability.

What is the status of efforts to outlaw texting while driving?

HOW DANGEROUS IS IT?
A new study from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute says that drivers texting are 23 percent more likely to get into an accident. By comparison, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has found that talking on a cell phone and driving under the influence makes the risk of a crash four times greater.

Local legislator says town hall meetings productive

While the debate over health-care reform has spawned raucous behavior at some town hall meetings, state Rep. Josh Shapiro said last week, “Our events have been very productive.”

Shapiro, D-153, was one of 32 state legislators from across the country appointed in June to a White House team of State Legislators for Health Reform. The group was established to advance the need for health-care reform this year and gather input on ways to lower costs and improve access.
